Dear Marlen,
At first when I took this class I thought I bit off more than I could chew but turns out that the work load was actually bearable. I said to myself that I was just going to muscle down and do the work and hope for the best. I remember you saying that if we put forth the effort than the grade will come to us.
Before the class started I got an email saying stuff about the monomyth. I was like what is the monomyth and why are we spending a whole semester talking about it. After reading the joseph cambell books and doing the monomyth work book I finally realized that this was actually worth spending a whole semester on. Everything in life you can take from the monomyth, I never really thought of comparing things in stories and things in life to the monomyth, but it turns out that it actually works.
There is so much to take from the monomyth it’s crazy that I was never taught this before. If it were up to me I would make it a required class in high school and college as well. It helps readers learn more about themselves and stories as well. It to me is one of the most important things in literature. You can break anything down from the monomyth. Either it’s stories from the bible, plays, poems, movies or things that happen in your life. Anything and I mean anything.
This class has really changed the way I think in college. Just because a course it tough doesn’t mean that it can not be fun. This class is by far the hardest class I’ve taken in my whole college career but it is also one of the most fun classes I’ve taken as well.
I like the topics we talked about in class. This made it easier to write a blog about the things we talked about. I didn’t like writing poems everyday because writing poems is really tough for me to do. I’m not the best at writing them but I got them done.
Going through this journey helped me understand what kind of person I was. It also helped showing me the shadow side of my archetype. I really enjoyed this class and glad that I took it. I feel sorry for the people that dropped this class because they sure missed out on some good things.
This class was a success and helped show me things I didn’t know about myself. If I could I would definitely take another course about the monomyth. I’m glad that I took this class and no regrets. Thank you Marlen for being a good fun English professor. You changed the way I look at class now. Just because a class is tough doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun class. Thank you for everything and good luck in the future.
Sincerely,
Brooks Palmer
